Improving Search Engine Placement

Search engines have become household tools people use to find websites of a particular interest. The closer a website is to the top of a search result, the better the chance it will see traffic. Because of this, it has become a goal for website owners to be listed as close to the top as possible in searches. There are several ways to improve the placement of a website in search results.
- Keywords
The first thing search engines look for are keywords listed in the code. Keywords should be specific to a website. It is best to have specific keywords of 2 or more words at a time. For example, a website selling vintage license plates would have the keywords “vintage license plates.” Keeping keywords specific improve a website’s placement in search results.
- Titles
Search engines also look for titles of pages in a website. Titles should represent the site in a manner that headlines represent a news article. It is also common to include a business name in the title. For example, a website offering retirement services would have the title “Retirement Services by Company X.” Having a simple, keyword-friendly title also improves website placement in search results.
- Content
Another factor search engines look for is text in the website. Keyword-rich text on a website gives more information that searches can see. For example, a website selling neon sports balls would have a paragraph starting with “We offer neon sports balls of all kinds, including neon tennis balls, neon soccer balls, and neon footballs.” Keyword-rich text can improve a website search placement.
- Sitemaps
Sitemaps provide search engines additional information to look at. Creating a sitemap on a website serves two purposes; they provide users with a “map” of the site in text form, and provide search engines more resources to look at. Adding links and keyword-rich text in the sitemap is a good way to improve search engine placement.
- Updating
Search engines often look at current websites before searching established sites that have not been updated recently. Updating keywords, titles, and content circulates a website into this category, improving the websites placement in the search results.
- Pay the Search Engine
Participating in a Pay Per click program offered by search engines drive relevant traffic to your website. Search engines will rank a high traffic website better than a low traffic site.
Please note that the key element in high search rankings is consistency. Making adjustments to your website every month or two will insure your website is relevant.
